The Short Version

You can use my content. You just have to say where you got it. That's the whole deal. The longer version below covers the edge cases, but if you remember one thing, make it that.

Permitted Use

Most content on this site - writing, code snippets, ideas, the occasional hot take - is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0) . That means you're free to share it, adapt it, remix it, and yes - even use it commercially - as long as you give proper credit and don't imply I endorsed whatever you made with it.

Think of it like borrowing a tool from a neighbor. You can use it, you can even modify it, but you still tell people whose garage it came from. Common courtesy, digital edition.

Attribution - How Not to Be That Person

If you use my content, here's all I ask. It's a short list on purpose:

  • Credit chrisbmn.com (and ideally me by name - Chris Budde) as the source.
  • Link back to the original post or the homepage. A URL is fine. A clickable link is better.
  • Be honest about changes. If you've remixed, trimmed, translated, or otherwise had your way with it, say so. Transparency is free.

That's genuinely it. Do those three things and we're good. Skip them and you've made my lawyer laugh - mostly because I don't have one, but I do have a strongly-worded email template.

What's Not Covered

A few things on this site aren't mine to license:

  • Third-party logos and brand marks - those belong to their respective owners. Don't touch them without permission from the people who actually own them.
  • Embedded content - if I'm quoting someone else, that content belongs to them. The attribution will say so.
  • Avatar and personal photos - not covered under CC BY 4.0. Please don't make me say why.

Permission Requests

If the CC BY 4.0 license doesn't cover what you have in mind, or you want to do something with my content that feels like it needs a more explicit "yes" - just ask. I'm one person and I respond to email. The worst I can say is no, and I'll probably explain why.

Updates to This Notice

This page may change if something significant warrants it. The date at the top reflects the last meaningful update - not just me fixing a typo. Continued use of my content after a change means you're on board with the updated terms. If that bothers you, the contact form is right here.
